Do you need a Return-to-Work Coordinator (RTWC)?

Do you need a Return-to-Work Coordinator (RTWC)?  Should you have one?  Are there any benefits?

Have you considered how having someone in the role of a Return-to-Work Coordinator (RTWC) could assist your business to ensure the early and appropriate management of potential workplace injury, and also injuries when they occur?

Beneficent is a 100% owned and run South Australian business, whose focus is on assisting employers and injured workers in South Australia to achieve the most cost effective, and rewarding return to work outcomes.

A RTWC can help keep the human cost of workplace injury to a minimum and contribute to a positive workplace culture, reducing psychosocial hazards.

Workplace management of injury is a very complex and sensitive process, requiring someone highly adept in interpersonal skills and well experienced in the process.

A RTWC can assist in identifying potential injuries so early preventative measures can be implemented to prevent injury, they can also ensure early effective management when a workplace injury does occur.

So - whether your business currently has no claims or several – Beneficent can provide a low-cost effective service that enables employers to not only meet their legislative needs, but also assist employers to create a positive workplace culture, where employees feel safe and cared for.

What does the Law say?

As an employer, the law may say you need to appoint a RTWC – do you know the rules in South Australia for employers around having a RTWC?

RTWSA law says the following:

“all businesses operating in South Australia are required to appoint and retain a Return to Work Coordinator residing in South Australia, if they employ 30 or more workers.

This is a legal requirement under section 26 of the Return to Work Act (SA) 2014 and failure to comply may lead to prosecution and potential for a maximum penalty of $10,000.”

If you meet the legal requirement to have an RTWC you need to think about the best way to achieve this as quickly as possible.

You have 2 options if you want to meet legal requirements:

Don’t risk your workplace culture by upskilling an internal employee, who may not have enough ongoing exposure to the injury management process to ensure the return to work process is completed in a cost effective, compliant and compassionate manner.

The risk of contributing to a negative workplace culture, and large costs blow outs to an employer are very high when the injury management process goes wrong.

Outsource to an experienced professional to ensure you get the best results for your team and workplace!

Other times you may need to outsource your RTWC services:

  • Extended leave of your current RTWC

  • Maternity or paternity leave

  • Multiple active or complex claims that are beyond the scope of your current RTWC
